Unprecedented
global challenges
At no time in the
history of the World Student Christian Federation has the task of empowering
students been more important than now. Compared to previous generations, young
people today face unprecedented challenges in virtually every aspect of their
lives due to a rapidly changing world marked by deepening divisions, a world at
the brink of existential collapse and a world fragmented by wars.
At the same time, the
World Student Christian Federation itself is facing an unprecedented
existential crisis. Many of its member
movements, the lifeblood of the Federation, have been weakened, others have
ceased to exist. Yet those that remain continue their work of empowering
students for peace and social justice against enormous odds. Funds to support
the vital work of the Federation with and among students and youth are
dwindling each year as churches themselves face multiple crises, including
declining support from their congregations. The vital link between the
Federation, the church and the ecumenical movement has never been more
important.
The
WSCF in Asia and the Pacific
The WSCF in Asia and the Pacific has not been spared these challenges. The same global challenges translate into specific contextual challenges for youth and students in the region. Diminishing resources at the global level have resulted in reduced resources for the region. Nevertheless, the WSCF Asia-Pacific region continues to be a beacon of hope and unity for youth and students, empowering them to think critically in the light of the Christian faith and to act courageously to transform their communities and the world.
A unique
space
The WSCF is not just a student and youth movement. It is also a space that brings together multiple generations at global, regional, local, and national levels. This uniqueness is a gift because it not only ensures the sharing of different perspectives, but also helps to ensure continuity as stories and insights are passed on from one generation to the next. And in times of great need, Senior Friends organise themselves to raise financial and other resources and put them at the service of the WSCF. From informal networks to more formal organisations such as the WSCF Trustees in the USA, Senior Friends have played and continue to play a vital role in supporting the WSCF.
